  • The New Vic Theatre and Borderlines Creative Arts are providing after-school/college sessions for Ukrainian and Afghan children/young people as well as other refugees and asylum seekers.

    Volunteers are required to support the New Vic Theatre's newly formed Brighter Horizons after-school/college sessions for Ukrainian and Afghan children/young people as well as other refugees and asylum seekers in the local area. 

    The session are on Tuesday afternoons from 4 - 5.30pm, for 11 - 18 year olds, providing homework help, skill building, creative activities, and opportunities to make new friends. Healthy snacks provided. The New Vic Theatre is in Newcastle-under-Lyme. 

    We would love some volunteers from Keele to support this, especially to help with homework and gcse revision in subjects such as Maths Science and English lit and language 

    We will provide DBS checks and also cover transport costs for volunteers

    Online Volunteer Tutor (GCSE)

    We are looking for students, staff, and alumni to tutor a young person aged 14-16, online, one hour a week in term-time from September 2024 – June 2025 to support them with their academic studies.

    The Access Project supports pupils from under-resourced backgrounds to access top universities. We are looking for undergraduates, postgraduates, staff, and alumni who would be able to tutor a young person aged 14-16, online, one hour a week in term-time Autumn 2024- Summer 2025 to support them with their academic studies.

    •Support a young person in a subject of your choice to achieve the GCSE grades they deserve and to fulfil their potential.

    •Build transferable skills, experience and knowledge through ongoing training and development as part of the role.

    •Students supported by The Access Project typically achieve a grade higher at GCSE and are twice more likely than their peers to progress to a top-third ranked university.

    No prior teaching or tutoring experience necessary, we provide a full comprehensive training and induction to help you build the confidence to be the best volunteer you can be.

    Interested? You’ll need to:

    · Either be currently studying for an undergraduate degree or have an undergraduate degree/equivalent professional qualification.

    · Either have an A Level subject or an undergraduate degree in a subject you wish to tutor at GCSE level.

    · Be able to spare one hour a week in school term time over the next academic year to tutor (starting Sept/Oct 2024), plus 30 mins a week preparation time.

    · Be prepared to undertake an enhanced DBS check (criminal records check) and provide two references (personal or professional).

    How does it work?

    2. Sign up to any of our 2.5 hour training sessions over the summer, there are various dates so you can find one that suits you: During this session you’ll learn everything you need to know for your weekly one1 hour tutoring sessions.

    3. You’ll complete a DBS check (criminal records check) and an online safeguarding course.

    4. We’ll match you with a student who is looking for support in your subject. In particular, we are seeing high demand from our students for support with sciences and maths. Volunteers who are able to support in either of these subjects would be particularly welcome. There are also many opportunities for volunteer tutors in other subjects including humanities and languages.

    Are you a looking to gain experience supporting children during the summer holiday? Are you a creative, friendly, open-minded person? Caudwell Children are looking for volunteers to help with our summer holiday project!

    These Sessions (Holiday and Food - HAF) enable disabled children to access fun, inspirational and challenging leisure activities that build life skills and promote independence whilst providing carers with vital short break respite.

    Volunteer Responsibilities include:

    • Assist Caudwell Children staff member(s) in running the short break activity sessions
    • Help to ensure all children are safe during the activity sessions
    • Support staff members with planned activities
    • Participate in setting up an activity and helping with the set down
    • Communicate and work with the children to ensure they have fun

     

    This role takes place during August 2024. We are looking for volunteers that can commit to 8 days for this role – full training and support will be provided.

    Are you a looking to do something worthwhile during the summer? Are you looking to gain communication and administration experience in an office environment?Caudwell Children are looking for volunteers to help to support families applying for vital pieces of equipment for disabled children

    As a volunteer in our service delivery office, roles and responsibilities may include:

    • Processing applications for specialist equipment, therapies and treatment, verifying financial documentation and diagnosis letters
    • Data inputting onto our database system
    • Carrying out a range of administrative tasks
    • Answering telephone / email enquiries & welcoming visitors on reception
    • Family support by researching services & providing signposting information

    This role can take place between June and September. We are looking for volunteers that can commit to at least two full weeks (10 days) for this role – full training and support will be provided.

  • As an Initial Adviser you will likely be the first person a client speaks to when they call the Citizens Advice helpline or use the Citizens Advice Email or Web chat service. Most of our Initial Advisers are volunteers and we could not run the service without them.What will you do?? complete an introduction to Citizens Advice and training for your role.? talk to clients over the phone to explore what problems they’ve come for help with. If you are unable to speak or hear over the phone you can train to give advice by email or webchat.? find information about the clients’ problems and help them to understand their options.? support clients to take action to resolve their problems. This might include drafting or writing letters, making phone calls, or referring the client to another organisation.? write a summary of the clients’ problems and what action you’ve taken.? look out for problems’ that are common, or are unfair, and write a short report about the problem or a letter to an elected official like an MP, AM or local councillor.

    For individuals who are doing advice giving roles, and who are also training to be a solicitor, if you started training to be a solicitor before 1st September 2021, you may be able to get up to six months reduction in your training contract.

    If you started training to be a solicitor after 1st September 2021, you may be able to include time spent volunteering (or working) in advice giving roles as part of (or all of) your qualifying work experience. See Solicitors Regulation Authority for more information.

    What do you need to have?

    You don’t need specific qualifications or skills, but you’ll need to:

    • be friendly and approachable.
    • be non-judgmental and respect views, values and cultures that are different to your own.
    • have good listening skills.
    • have good verbal and written communication skills.
    • have good maths and IT skills.
    • be able to understand information and explain it to others.
    • be willing to learn about and follow the Citizens Advice aims, principles and policies, including confidentiality and data protection.
    • be willing to undertake training in your role.

    How much time do you need to give?

    We ask for a minimum of 3 hours per week, for at least 12 months.

    Many of our volunteers give one full day or two half days per week.

    Children from lower-income families are less likely to achieve academically than their better-off peers. Action Tutoring is a charity that works to level the playing field.We are looking for volunteers to support pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds in maths or English. As a volunteer, you’ll:- Work with 1-3 pupils to improve their English and maths, either in-person or online- Commit to a 10-20 week programme, for just one hour a week- Support either primary or secondary school-aged pupils- Use our tutor workbooks to shape your weekly sessions

    As a charity we rely on funds donated by generous members of the public to continue to help cats and kittens in need. Our fundraising volunteers are part of a passionate team that help raise funds to help our feline friends in need. They help plan and deliver exciting and varied fundraising events, which can be anything from craft fairs, cake sales, sponsored abseils – and anything in between!

    What can you expect to be doing?

    • Helping organise fundraising events in your local area 
    • Sharing fundraising ideas with other volunteers and putting these into practice

    As a charity we are only able to help thousands of cats and kittens each year thanks to the donations we receive from generous members of the public. Our online fundraisers help our volunteer groups raise vital funds by organising online sales of goods, using social media to encourage donations and any other innovative ways to raise funds they can think of! Making a difference can mean as little as raising 18p, which is enough to feed one cat in our care for a day.

    What can you expect to be doing? 

    • Organising online donations and selling products to raise funds
    • Raising funds through social networking sites and websites
    • Asking for pledges and raising awareness of how donated funds are used at Cats Protection
