Student Volunteering Week 2019

 
 
Last year student volunteers did some amazing work with a wide variety of charities. They did such a good job that the same charities want to work with us again this year. This years Student Volunteering Week offers even more opportunities for students, so let's work together and make SVW 2019 the best it can be!

 

It’s that time of year again, ready to get volunteering?

 

Whether you have volunteered before or you’re new to the volunteering World Student Volunteering Week is a great way to get involved in lots of different activities. This year Student Volunteering Week runs from 11th-17th February and there are a wide variety of workshops, activities and information stalls on offer for students who want to get stuck in, have fun and find out more.

Monday

 

Code Club

1.30pm-3.00pm 

                                                    Dorothy Hodgkin – DH0.44

Kicking off the week we have Code Club running a Coding Session. In this training session you will find out what Code Club is and learn new skills. You will also receive an introduction to Scratch and the Code Club learning projects. This training session will take place in DH0.44 which is located in The Dorothy Hodgkin Building at 1.30pm-3.00pm. There are plenty of places however this type of opportunity has proved to be popular in the past so don’t wait around and sign up today! In addition to this there will be a stand in the Reception area of the Students’ Union building being run by Beth Johnson Foundation. This charity strives to make the UK age-friendly, working with volunteers, researchers, intergenerational practitioners, and age-specialist partner organisations. They speak up for the rights of older people and want change. To learn more about this charity and find out about future volunteering opportunities then why not go and visit their stand from 10am-3pm and chat with a member of staff.

 

 

Tuesday

 

The Gingerbread Centre

 1pm-2pm

                                                  SU Building – meeting room 2

On Tuesday we have The Gingerbread Centre coming into the SU to run a training and information session. You can find out what the charity does, who benefits and what future opportunities there are for volunteers. There will also be activities taking place during the workshop, giving the students opportunities to get stuck in and play an active role. These activities will involve a bit of role playing and other drama games. This will take place in Meeting Room 2 in the Students’ Union building from 1pm-2pm. If you don’t get the chance to come the workshop then don’t panic! There will be a stall in the reception area of the Students’ Union on the following day to provide information to students.

Wednesday

 

 

Busiest day of the week, plenty of opportunities to get involved! We have an activity with the Campus Green Team, a workshop run by Caudwell Children and The Gingerbread Centre are returning to run a stall.

 

Cauldwell Children

                                                   10am-4pm

Starting off the day we have a workshop being run by Caudwell Children where students can get involved with the charity, see how they work and have taster sessions with their three main departments. Volunteers will get to document their day in various different ways, for example, Q & A, Vlogging, going live on Facebook and even interview volunteers from different departments. This is a great opportunity to really see how a charity works and gives you a chance to help someone else. This will be taking place at Caudwell Children from 10am-4pm.    Campus Green Team

                                                     1pm-3pm

                                                        Memorial Garden

Later in the day the Campus Green Team will be running a Memorial Garden clean up activity from 1pm-3pm. This is a chance for you to spend some time out in the fresh air, give something back to the university and something you will benefit from yourself.    The Gingerbread Centre

Whilst these events are taking place The Gingerbread Centre will be returning to run a stall from 12.30pm-2.30pm in the Reception area of the Students’ Union building. If you missed the session on the Tuesday then this is a great way for you get information about the charity, find out about volunteering opportunities and ask your own questions.

  

 

Thursday

 

Campus Green Team

                                                     1pm-3pm

                                                    Keele Woods

The Campus Green Team are running another opportunity on this day in case you missed the Memorial Garden clean up or if you really enjoy the outdoors. This activity involves clearance work in the woods and litter picking. This will take place at 1pm-3pm and again all of the equipment will be supplied. Just click the link to sign up:

Friday

 

                                                      Food Bank Friday is back!

Please donate non-perishable food to our Food Bank on Friday to help families in need. The stall will be located outside Costcutter from 10am-4pm. If you are interested in helping run the stall then drop us an email at: su.volunteering@keele.ac.uk

 

                     

             Saturday

 

 

As normal we have organised the Dog Walking at Greyhound Gap from 10am-2pm. Take some time off from studying to get some fresh air and do something which will benefit someone else.

This activity is extremely popular so sign up fast and don’t miss out on your opportunity to walk some cute doggos!

 

 

Update!

 

New opportunities have just been added to Student Volunteering Week. On the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Douglas Macmillan Hospice are looking for students to volunteer at their warehouse in Burslem 9.30am-4pm. You don't need to be available all day everyday, just doing a few hours on one day would be a great help to this charity. There will also be an extra stall on Tuesday 12th February run by Parkinson UK. This will be situated in the Students' Union from 11am-2pm, come a long and see what volunteering opportunties are on offer!
