Michelle Folkes and her mum receiving The Sentinel's Our Heroes Award 2019 for Community Group

Keele Students' Union Volunteering department are very excited to announce that we have recently partnered up with Scrap Shack who are a ‘Not for Profit’ Community Interest Company that reclaims clean safe waste from local businesses and individuals. They opened their doors on Tuesday 29th March 2011 after a few extremely busy months preparation, but have recently moved to a new premises to accommodate their expanding project.

The Company Director is Michelle Folkes, whose aim is to offer a scrap recycling store in Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire to schools, pre-schools, community groups, families, individuals and anyone else who can find a  use for the many wonderful items they have in stock. Only scrap suitable as a creative resource is collected and once sorted it is displayed in their Scrapstore for members to select, purchase and use.

The Scrapstore is filled with a selection of regular scrap including: paper, card, foam, fabric, plastics, tubes, tubs, wood, etc. In the ‘Shack Shop’ area they also stock one off donations of surplus giftware, stationery, toys and unusual items. It feels like a wondrous Aladdin's cave full of treasures.

They were featured in an article earlier this year in Staffordshire's local newspaper The Sentinel, please see the link below

Michelle and her team also won Community Group Winner for The Sentinels Our Heroes Award 2019.

They have an exciting volunteer opportunity, currently on our database, asking for assistance in the day to day running of the scrapstore. The lucky volunteers willl be at the forefront of a project that centres around sustainabilty, with the opportunity to develop new project areas in a caring, fun and supportive environment.
