Student Hedgehog Ambassador

This opportunity is ongoing, with no end date.

We need Student Hedgehog Ambassadors to help their Hedgehog Friendly Campus team to make positive changes for hedgehogs on campus.

Hedgehogs are under threat in the UK, with up to 50% declines since the year 2000. They’re now listed as vulnerable to extinction on Britain’s Red List for mammals. 

What is a Student Hedgehog Ambassador?

A Student Hedgehog Ambassador is a university or FE college student who helps their Hedgehog Friendly Campus team to make positive changes for hedgehogs on campus. 

What is the time commitment?

This is a voluntary position, so the time commitment is flexible. Roughly, you can expect to commit 1 hour per month to the role. 

What does the role entail?

Responsibilities may include:

  • Collaborating: attend working group meetings

  • Creating: make campaign resources

  • Action: attend/organise Hedgehog-Friendly activities such as

    • Litter picks

    • Hedgehog surveys

    • Hedgehog habitat sessions

  • Fundraising: attend/organise fundraisers for the BHPS

  • Accreditation: gather evidence for the Hedgehog Friendly Campus award

  • Innovating: come up with new ideas

  • Engaging: make links with the community to help hedgehogs

  • Social: manage social media accounts


How many Student Hedgehog Ambassadors does a team need?

There is no limit on the number of Student Hedgehog Ambassadors. You will be supporting the Hedgehog Champion/s (team leader/s) who make up the rest of the team.

How do Student Hedgehog Ambassadors differ from University or College Hedgehog Champions?

Student Hedgehog Ambassadors are student team members, who support the team by attending meetings and taking part in Hedgehog-Friendly activities. A University or College Hedgehog Champion is the team's leader. To read more about the Hedgehog Champion role, click here.

What support do Student Hedgehog Ambassadors receive?

  • A Student Hedgehog Ambassador logo for your email signature

  • A digital team resource pack

  • Admin support from the national Hedgehog Friendly Campus programme 

  • Advice on the accreditation process (including pre-audits)

  • Training and resources to complete Hedgehog-Friendly activities

  • Support from us at your first Working Group meeting (on request)

Student Hedgehog Ambassadors also receive a tailored certificate and CV reference.
