Democratic Review

What are we doing?

What are we doing?

We want to make it easier for students to make change in KeeleSU by introducing a number of changes to our democratic processes. You can find out more about these changes below, but these changes have led to the re-writing of a number of our Bye-Laws. The current set of Bye-Laws can be found here or clicking on the left-hand graphic below. You can also view our revised chapters, which will make up Chapters 1-4 of the Bye-Laws document, here or by clicking on the right-hand graphic below.

We're also revamping our submission form for you to submit ideas for improving the Students' Union. Previously this was done by visiting keelesu.com/ideas, but we will now be introducing a smart new form which allows you to make it clear what you are aiming to do and what kind of information to submit. You can view both the old form and new form by clicking on the graphics below.

Why are we doing this?

Why are we doing this?

As part of the KeeleSU 2017-2021 Strategic Plan, KeeleSU Student Voice and the Union Development and Democracy Officer were tasked with 'making it easier for students to change things'. Students should be able to influence their union to work for them, and we conducted research and worked to find out how to 'make it easier for students to change things'. You can click the graphic below to read our report on why we're doing this, that also goes through how we arrived at these changes.

Our democratic review report

This report also shows the work we've done over the past year to trial some of these new ideas. These have seen us transform many of our old motions into clearer and more transparent action points, which allow officers to understand what is expected from them and which allows them to feedback in their reports on how they have worked to accomplish these expectations. You can see a list of these action points in each of the slides from our UGMs this year by clicking on the graphics below.

Where can I find out more?

Where can I find out more?

The best thing you can do is visit our focus group on Thursday 16th May in the MARS Room at 3pm. We'll be going through the changes we've proposed and taking any questions you might have, which makes it a great way to find out more and have your say. We'll also be bringing this Democratic Review to our Union General Meeting on Wednesday 22nd May at 5:30pm in K2 where you'll be able to vote on these changes to help make it easier to Have Your Say.

If you can't attend our focus group, make sure to get in touch with Tom Snape our Union Development and Democracy Officer at su.uddofficer@keele.ac.uk to find out more. He's also produced a handy video which you can see be clicking on the graphic below. It's a little lengthy but goes through the work we've done if you can't make the focus group or our UGM - enjoy!
