UGM Motion Update:
1- To encourage appropriate clothing to wear (inside ballroom)
2- To explore airflow issues (fire exit doors, fans)
3- To talk to the university about their intentions (if any)
4- Explore alternative options to cool students down (slushy drinks, ice lollies, water more accessible)
5- Explore a potential new SU building
6- Explore security risks of having the fire doors open
Firstly, we are always wanting a new SU building but I think we can all agree that this is not a realistic aim for the near future. The idea to look at airflow issues has been considered in the past, on the busier nights the fire exit doors and the doors behind the sage have been opened but this does come at a cost of an extra 4 security staff, which is not a sustainable model in the long term. The alternative options to cooling down students is much cheaper than hiring more security staff but there is an issues with storing the products which can cause barriers. Slushy drinks are available during the summer as we understand it can be extremely hot, the SU staff will also look to offering this on certain events throughout the year. Lastly, I have emailed Estates and asked for a formal statement on the air con situation within our building so hopefully there will be more information to follow this blog.
