I'm your Activities & Community Officer!

Email me at su.communityofficer@keele.ac.uk or contact me on social media below:

Hi I’m Leroy, your elected Activities & Community Officer. I’m here to represent the students views to the university whilst also making sure you get the most out of your time here at Keele whether it be doing volunteering work out in the community or getting involved with all the societies we have at Keele.

I studied a Postgraduate Degree in Politics and International Relations and shortly afterward stood for election and became the Activities and Community Officer at the Students’ Union. When I came here I wanted to dive in and do stuff and help people too, so I got involved with and became a committee member of multiple societies and clubs and I even started one too. My extracurricular activities usually consist of Fencing plus anything sporty and video games.

Hello!

If you are reading this, that means you managed to navigate the jungle that is the SU website, congrats!

Who am I?
I'm Ela Hollies, the person you elected to be your Vice President of Finance & Activities over the upcoming academic year. I graduated yesterday with a 2:1 in Media & Sociology, I like hip hop music and I did A LOT of stuff with societies last year which is where you may know me from. Those first two most probably weren't relevant, but the last one is very important. I'm here to support students in all of their extra-curricular - or rather, "co-curricular" - activities, so, if you're in a society, or you want to set one up, I'm the person you need to speak to!

What have I been up to?

HANDOVER
Every year when a new team is elected they go through a whole month of fairly intense training and team building. You learn all the important stuff about being an elected officer and you all the significant university people. Safe to say, we definitely all bonded effectively, sharing the wonderful experience of sinking to the bottom of Keele lake during Be More Duck.

MOVING IN
From July 1st we officially came into office! It was definitely strange the first day, turning up and none of the previous officers being there, but I think we've managed to survive so far. We've moved the office around so do come have a look. It's a very unique layout and we've had mixed reviews, but you're all always welcome!

ENTS FORUM
My second day of office I attended the Ents Forum at Liverpool Students' Union with KeeleSU's events coordinator Charnelle. It was nice to find out how different students' unions run their Entertainments' Departments. Also, KeeleSU was nominated for Best Venue with +1000 capacity and Charnelle was nominated for "Rising Star". More importantly, it was the first night I tried a burrito and I was impressed.

WEBSITE RE-VAMP!
HALLELUJAH! The Activities section of the SU website has had a do-over so take a look, it's SO much better and you have new(ish) activities staff member Mike Palmer to thank, so make sure to bring him a present at the Activities conference ;) The best improvement is the resources section, you need to log in to view it.

SU15
The whole team attended the NUS SU15 conference last week. Although some sessions weren't so helpful, others definitely were. I could only be there the first day but found value in both the sessions I attended. I learnt a lot from Hootsuite's Community manager, Dan Spicer, and managed to secure some extra social media resources which I think will be useful for both the SU and students working on their society' social media management. The other session was related to student employment and employability, which I found to be less useful, but it was interesting to see different SU's stances on student employment pay and schemes they've used to encourage employability.

GRADUATION
Graduation week seems to be going well so far. The weather may have been poor on Monday, but Nat, Jo and I did a rain dance which has clearly worked.

Graduation

We're really looking forward to the Graduation Ball and After Party on Thursday night :D

ROOM BOOKINGS
I had a meeting today with Ian Jenkinson (Premises Manager) about the issues relating to societies block-booking rooms and am collecting feedback to take forward and make improvements. If you have anything you'd like to express about this, good or bad, pop me an email at su.vpfinance@keele.ac.uk.

OTHER
Overall, these past two weeks have just been getting settled, working on ongoing society issues (KUBE, I'm looking at you! :P), and setting up meetings with relevant people to work on the aims I set out to achieve in my manifesto and new ones that have come up working with the rest of the Sabb team and SU staff. Hopefully if you're involved in a society then you've all seen my email introducing myself, but anyway please do get in touch if you need anything, we're here to help!
