Experience & Community Officer Blog

Hi I’m Tom, your elected Activities & Community Officer. I’m here to represent the students views to the university whilst also making sure you get the most out of your time here at Keele whether it be doing volunteering work out in the community or getting involved with all the societies we have at Keele.

I studied the Environment and Sustainability BSc at Keele University. During this time I involved myself mostly with Think:Green Society as President and Amnesty Society as Secretary. I was also last year's International Students' Officer at Keele SU. In my spare time I love to cook while listening to music (mostly the Beatles), play video games, and enjoy the environment through walks and gardening.

Talk to me about:

  • Our 150+ societies
  • RAG (Raise & Give) - our charity fundraising
  • Volunteering

My UGM Report!

 First buses meeting

We had a meeting with executives from First Buses to look into the flow of bus traffic to and from Keele amongst other things such as:

  • An earlier service for placement students
  • A cross buses platform ticket with D&G
  • A review into paper annual passes
  • and many more

-        Healthier menu items

A new pamphlet and advertisement piece has been published with details from the SU with healthy menu items at Union Kitchen. There is also a wider review going on across all campus eateries.

-        Off campus presence meeting

I’ve had the meeting with Estates to open a dialogue about an off campus presence. It is ongoing and anything coming from that will be reported back.

-        Friday Night Society bookings

Much like the sports team bookings for social zones on Wednesdays, societies can now do the same for Fridays with access to booking the same social zones by putting them through the booking system for Friday (they will have their own cocktail deals specifically for Fridays within the social zones period). Applications for booking social zones open on Saturday 10am and close on Thursday 5pm every week and will be selected by the Activities Officer. Societies should then turn up for their booked social zone at 8pm. Also if sports teams miss out on a Wednesday, they can apply for a Friday slot provided that there is a space open that hasn’t already been taken or prioritised for societies first.

-        Organising more themed nights for this semester

We have a mix of themed events ready dotted around after refreshers ready, with takeover nights, a pride night and a few more to come.

-        International student communities and societies

I’ve been working on keeping alive and creating opportunity for international societies to stay active in Keele SU with students from foreign exchange programs. By including in the international student welcome information and making exceptions on keeping open vacant committees for slightly longer of internationally themed/based societies; we can have students on exchange programs have these societies internationally and student led. This also so that they have something kept open for their student experience when arriving in the UK
