Join a Club or Society!

There are over 150 student groups affiliated to the Union, and we encourage all of them to think about sustainability in everything they do.

From dance groups and campaigning, cultural societies and gaming, there's bound to be something out there that piques your interest. Clubs and Societies are a great way to meet new friends, try something new and develop skills and experiences that will stay with you for life. They're a big part of the social aspect of university life and play a huge role in the maintenance of good health and wellbeing. You can view a full list of our clubs and societies here, but we've also highlighted some of our greenest groups in the dropdown menu below!

English Heritage & National Trust Society

"We're a society that aims to provide a relaxed environment in which to socially visit National Trust and English Heritage sites roughly once a fortnight. Whilst we'd love for you to come on every trip, it is not required or expected.

These visits would provide an opportunity to get out of the 'Keele bubble' whilst being able to increase cultural knowledge. A breath of fresh air is always beneficial to mental wellbeing; as a Society our aim to to have a positive impact of the mental wellbeing of students who join, and provide a space where they can relax and forget about any stress and work involving University."

Geography Society

KUGS is one of our academic societies that works closely with students studying disciplines ranging from Geography, Geology, Geoscience and Environmental Science. From academic support to socials, charity work and day trips, anyone is invited to join whether you study a related subject or not! In the past, KUGS have been very involved with Keele Green Festival and other sustainable events around the uni.

Wildlife Society

"The society aims to provide a place for people with a love and interest of wildlife to meet. For events and socials, we will go on walks around the Keele campus and further afield to allow time for wildlife spotting and adventures! We also aim to provide inspiring speakers and lectures on a variety of wildlife topics which may inspire and encourage a stronger passion for wildlife." We particularly recommend this society if you love hedgehogs, as they're very active with the Hedgehog Friendly Campus campaign! Find out more here.

Part of a club or society already? Become a committee member!

Clubs and Societies are led by students just like you, who are democratically elected every year during committee elections. Being on committee gives you real control of the group, and allows you the platform to make any changes and connect with staff and students around the university and even in the local community. If you're interested in sustainability, why not become a committee member and give yourself the platform for change?

Volunteering with KeeleSU

We have a brilliant team of staff dedicated to bringing you all kinds of volunteering opportunities from within the SU, the university and the wider community. You can create your very own Volunteering Profile, and log any hours you spend volunteering - whatever form that might take - and earn rewards along the way!

From tree planting to litter picking, campaigning and caring, there are so many things out there which will allow you to directly contribute to a more sustainable future for all. You can browse any of the numerous vacancies advertised by our community partners, and get personalised emails sent straight to your inbox when new opportunities arrive. Here are just a few examples of the organisations we work with:

  • Staffordshire Wildlife Trust
  • Girlguiding & Scouts
  • Duke of Edinburgh's Award
  • Citizen's Advice
  • Caudwell Children

Visit the Volunteering pages to view a full list of our volunteering opportunities.

Haven't quite found something that fits? Or do you have a great idea for a project that's not currently listed? Why not set up your own sustainable volunteering project! After all, that's exactly how new clubs and societies are formed!
