🎤 External Speakers at Keele

Inviting external engage the wider Keele community. However, all external speaker events must follow the Speaker and Event Approval Procedure set by Keele University to ensure safety, legality, and freedom of expression.

📌 Who Counts as an External Speaker?

An external speaker is anyone who is not a current Keele student, staff member, or alumni. This includes guest lecturers, public figures, professionals, and representatives from external organisations.

🛠️ How to Invite an External Speaker

  1. Plan Ahead: Allow at least 3 weeks before your event to complete the approval process.
  2. Submit a Request: Use your society’s admin tools to create the event and complete the External Speaker Request Form.
  3. Provide Details: Include the speaker’s name, background, topic, and any potential risks or concerns.
  4. Wait for Approval: The SU and University will assess the request based on the Freedom of Expression Code of Practice.

🔍 What Is Assessed?

The University considers:

  • Compliance with the law (e.g. Equality Act, Human Rights Act)
  • Potential risks to safety, well-being, or public order
  • Whether the event supports respectful and open discussion

In rare cases, events may be modified or declined if risks cannot be reasonably mitigated.

✅ Tips for Societies

  • Start early—approval can take time.
  • Be transparent about your speaker’s background and topic.
  • Ensure your event aligns with Keele’s values of respect, inclusion, and academic freedom.
