About Me:

Hi everyone! I'm Matt, I study English Literature, currently in my final year doing my master’s degree and I am running to be Education Officer! I’ve been studying at Keele for nearly 5 years now. During that time I have been a voice rep, a club captain and a postgraduate delegate for Union Assembly. In my spare time I play video games and sometimes you will find me playing frisbee or korfball or even sometimes you may even find me up a climbing wall.

Why should you vote for me?

I have loved being your Education Officer this year, being able to advocate for students throughout the many meetings and conversations I have had with the University and Students' Union. Advocating for students is something I continue to be really passionate about. Even before becoming education officer, throughout time at Keele advocacy has been skill that has grown alongside me throughout my studies.

I’m re-running to be Education Officer because I'm passionate. Passionate about the academic experience, Passionate about pushing for change and Passionate about making your voice heard! One of the biggest things we all have in common here at Keele, is education and wanting the best experience getting that degree. Like many of you, my own academic experience at Keele has been impacted by many different issues from broken timetables, bunched deadlines and Microsoft teams breaking down to widescale events like the covid pandemic. My time at Keele has definately been far from smooth sailing and its because of that I have always wanted to do more to make the academic experience better for all students so students don't have to deal with the academic problems I had. As an undergrad and now a postgrad student I have been lucky to also learn and see the different experiences that undergrad and postgrad students have at Keele and the different kinds of academic issues and problems they each face too. It is using the experience I have from during my studies and my passion to get a better educational experience on all fronts for all students is why say... Vote Matt for Education!

What makes me a good fit for the role?

During my time at Keele. I have also always been actively involved with the Students’ Union (SU) in various ways. I was a postgraduate delegate on the Union Assembly which allowed me to see and be a part of our Students’ Union democracy works whilst having the chance to advocate for the postgraduate voice. Alongside my studies I have involved with clubs and societies. I was Club Captain for Keele Mountaineering and Social Secretary then Technician for Keele Casual Gaming Society. Being on a society and club committe allowed me to develop skills in teamwork and leadership and supporting and working with different students in a team. Whilst on committee I went further by joining the Society Executive and AU Committee. Both of these roles gave me insight into what it is like behind the scenes and the work that goes into supporting students involved in clubs and societies. The skills in teamwork, leadership and advocacy are all skills that continue to shape my experience, whether its working with other officers and staff to taking the lead on organising my own projects or help advocate for the students who aren't actively involved in the SU . All the skills I have gained whilst being a student at Keele have and will help me be a great education officer.

Another reason why I think I would be a good Education Officer is my experience as a student voice rep in my 2nd year and in my 4th year. Being a voice rep is something I have had alot of experience with having also been one when I was a college too.  Unlike the other roles I have has during my studies, being voice rep gave me the opportunity to learn and experience just how academic voice works within Keele and how important and valuable our voices are as students. Having the chance to be that advocate when in the same rooms at school staff gave me the most important skill that I think would make me a good fit for Education Officer, it all comes back to advocacy. Not only supporting and listening to fellow students but having that experience of knowing how and where the right places are to get the student voice heard!

A Vote For Matt is a vote for a Education Officer who is passionate about your voice!
