Staffordshire Day, celebrated annually on May 1st, is a vibrant tribute to the rich history, cultural heritage, and enduring spirit of the county of Staffordshire, England. Chosen to commemorate the founding of the Wedgwood pottery company by Josiah Wedgwood in 1759—a moment that marked Staffordshire's rise as a global centre of ceramics—this day is a proud reminder of the county's contributions to industry, art, and society.

From the rolling hills of the Peak District in the north to the tranquil canals and bustling market towns in the south, Staffordshire Day is a time for residents and visitors alike to come together and honour the county's diverse identity. The day is filled with events that showcase everything from the world-renowned pottery industry and historic castles to the natural beauty of Cannock Chase and the innovation of modern-day businesses.

Local communities host a wide array of activities including food festivals, craft fairs, historical reenactments, guided walks, and museum exhibitions. Schools and libraries often participate with themed lessons and storytelling sessions, while local businesses proudly display Staffordshire-made goods. Social media campaigns using hashtags like #StaffordshireDay help spread the celebration far and wide, connecting people with shared roots and interests.

This event recognises the observance and liberation days that Keele SU is able to celebrate during this academic year.

While we aim to acknowledge each of these important dates, our staff team is not always able to organise an activity for every one. If you would like to organise something yourself, either individually or with a group of fellow students, and need some guidance or support, please do get in touch!

Have we missed an important date you believe should be included? Would you like support in running an event? Let us know!

Staffordshire Day is more than just a celebration of the past—it's a recognition of the county's resilience, creativity, and community spirit. It's a day to take pride in local achievements, support regional talent, and inspire future generations to carry forward the legacy of this remarkable county.
