Keele SU unveils plans for a new Co-op store on campus.

Today we can announce that Keele SU is to run and manage a Co-op store on the Keele University campus.

The new Keele SU Co-op store will transform the existing retail store into a brand-new state-of-the-art shop for students, staff and the local community.

Your Students’ Union, in conjunction with Keele University, have been working hard to regenerate the shops and services on-campus. This new Co-op will be the perfect fit for campus, as they share our values on connecting communities, bringing people together and making a difference.

The new store is expected to open ready for the new academic year and would be run and managed independently by Keele SU. The store will stock a tailored range of great value and quality Co-op own brand products, with a wide range of fair trade, free-from and vegan options.

This new store will bring both value to the campus experience and students' pockets, with Co-op being the only grocer to offer an exclusive 10% student discount to TOTUM card holders.

Holly Brooks, AU & Sport Officer 2020/21 and Union Development and Democracy Officer-Elect, said: “I'm super excited to announce the launch of Keele SU’s Co-op, focussed on sustainability, connecting communities and ethics. I believe the Co-op will provide a shop that's made for Keele students, with a variety of healthy, fresh, affordable food; addressing issues some students have raised. I'm also excited to try Co-op’s growing vegetarian and vegan range, and work with them on green projects!”

Martin Rogers, head of new channels at Co-op, said: “Our university franchise stores are a great opportunity for us to grow our brand, share our values, and get our products into the hands of the next generation of customers and members and as the exclusive retail grocery store franchise partner for The National Union of Students (NUS) and we’re already serving c.150k students up and down the country.

“We’re delighted to add Keele to our ever-growing portfolio and are looking forward to welcoming those students and community in September.”

With university stores already operating at Leeds, Kent, Newcastle, Oxford Brookes and Stirling, Keele is the seventh Co-op franchise store to open across six universities, supporting the Co-op’s strategy to get closer to communities and to where what its customers want, need and, care about.

Further details on the project will be announced in due course, along with recruitment for Customer Team Member roles.
