Statement from Keele SU Elected Officers on Walleys Quarry Closure
As your elected representatives, we are pleased with the decision by the Environment Agency to issue a closure notice to Walleys Quarry, the landfill site in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
The notice will stop the site accepting new waste from Friday (29th November). The notice also orders the company to take “effective measures to prevent landfill gas emissions from affecting the local community”.
The persistent odour and environmental impact from the quarry have significantly affected the quality of life for many residents, including a large number of Keele University students.
In 2022, Keele University Students' Union was mandated by students to support the Stop The Stink campaign, reflecting our commitment to advocating for a healthier and safer environment.
You can see a video explaining the Environment Agency's decision to issue a Closure Notice, and what happens next here.
We welcome today's news and hope that we see the full closure of the landfil site in the future.
