Union Delegates

A number of Part-Time Elected Officers; students who volunteer their time to campaign on issues and improve the student experience.

What is a Union Delegate?

A union delegate plays a crucial role in representing the student body at national conferences and within the union itself. Here are some key aspects of their role:

  1. Representation: Union delegates are elected to represent their students’ union at the National Union of Students (NUS) conferences. They discuss and debate the NUS’s political direction, vote on policies, and decide who should be running the NUS

  2. Policy Making: They have the power to influence national policies that affect students. This includes voting on motions and proposals that shape the SU's stance on various issues, from education funding to student welfare

  3. Advocacy: Delegates advocate for the interests and concerns of their fellow students. They ensure that the voices of their peers are heard, helping to drive changes that benefit the student community

  4. Engagement: They work to engage with the student body, gathering feedback and opinions to bring to the conferences. This helps ensure that the decisions made reflect the needs and desires of the wider student population.

  5. Networking: Being a delegate also provides opportunities to network with other student leaders from across the country, share best practices, and collaborate on initiatives that can improve student life at their own and other institutions.

Overall, union delegates are vital in bridging the gap between the student body, national student organisations and the Students' Union, ensuring that student voices are represented and heard in important discussions and decisions.

Delegates are elected in the Keele SU elections, which take place in April and November each academic year. If you're interested in one of the roles or would like to know more, contact su.voice@keele.ac.uk! Want to find minutes of Union Assembly meetings, or check back on what was voted on? Do you have an Idea or Issue that you would like Union Assembly to discuss? Fill out this form: Union Assembly Ideas Submission
Submissions must be made a week before Union Assembly meets to ensure that submissions align with our Charitable Objectives, Charity Law and any other relevant legislation. Proposers have the option to be kept updated on their submissions, and will be notified of whether their submission has been approved by delegates.

All our affliations with external organisations are voted on at our Annual General Meeting which will be taking place on Tuesday 2nd December 2025.

Delegates attend a meeting called the Union Assembly, which is a democratic meeting with the full-time officers. Whilst primarily attended by the elected representatives, it is open to any and all students. The representatives are able to hold the Elected Officers to account and vote on motions that can be brought by any student.
