Marketing and Promotion

Knowing how to market your group affectively is one of the best ways that you can attract new members. Here are some top tips on what you can do!

Knowing how to market your club or society effectively is essential to boosting your group’s profile and attracting new members. It can be time-consuming, as good marketing takes effort and planning. Some larger groups even appoint a dedicated committee member—such as a Marketing, Social Media, or Publicity Officer. If you think your society could benefit from this, check out the elections section of the Committee Resources to learn how to add a new role.

The Basics!

Some of these tips may seem obvious, but many groups overlook them. For more advanced marketing advice, scroll to the bottom of the page and explore the linked resources.

Make Sure Your Group 'Does What It Says on the Tin'

Creative names can be fun, but if they’re too vague, new students may not understand what your society is about. Avoid acronyms—unless they’re widely recognised—as they can create confusion and a sense of exclusivity. For example, “KPS” could refer to multiple societies. Clear, descriptive names are more welcoming and accessible.

Nailing Your Group Description

The description is the second thing students will see after your group’s name on the SU website. Make it count! This is your chance to showcase what your group is about and why someone should join.

You can edit your webpage using your committee admin tools under 'Edit Details'.

  • Use paragraphs, bullet points, images, and videos to make it engaging.
  • Keep it concise—don’t write too much or too little.
  • Be creative, friendly, and welcoming in your tone.
  • Keep your description up to date.
  • Link your social media pages so students can easily find and contact you.

Creating a Logo

Browse all Keele clubs and societies—which ones stand out? The ones with logos! You don’t need to be a graphic designer to create a great logo. In fact, simple logos are often the most effective and memorable.

We recommend using Canva—a free design tool with great templates. Or, if someone on your committee is artistic, ask them to design one for you!
