Union Development & Democracy Officer Blog

Hey! I’m Jade and I’m your Development and Democracy Officer for this year. It’s my job to help develop Keele SU to make sure it’s responding to the needs of students. I also make sure students feel represented, while acting as a voice for Keele students on issues and campaigns they care about in the University, local community and nationally.

At Keele I have studied a BA in Politics with Sociology and a PG Dip. As a student, I held a part-time officer role and attended many clubs and society events. Outside of University, I love game nights with my friends, going shopping, listening to JLS and laughing at my own jokes.

Talk to me about:

  • Making Keele SU a more welcoming place for everyone
  • The facilities and services that students need such as transport, parking, laundry and accommodation
  • Cost-of-Living
  • Empowering the student voice through part-time roles, elections and Networks

Amy's Annual General Meeting (AGM) report

Hi everyone,

This blog is an update on what I’ve been mandated to do from the last UGM (30/10/2019).

Voter Registration

As the build up to the General Election is ongoing, we are still in the middle of campaigning and raising awareness to students. However, this is the progress I’ve made so far:

  • When I contacted the student records team, they told me that they didn’t do the automatic registration of students (as they normally do) due to the registration deadline. Instead, they sent emails to students with information about how to do this instead.

  • We launched a Register to Vote campaign, which was very successful. We hosted stalls everyday in the Students’ Union and had one at the CEC for a day, where we had laptops for students to register to vote, in addition to information about why people should register.

  • As requested, I organised and chaired a Hustings event, which was in collaboration with the University, where all parliamentary candidates of Newcastle-Under-Lyme attended. Each candidate had a stall in which they could display information and speak to students on a one-to-one basis. We then had each candidate do a five minute speech and answer questions that had been submitted in advance. Students involved in Concourse also interviewed candidates for the next edition.

  • We have given students information about different aspects of registering and voting in a variety of forms (emails and social media) and will continue to do so until polling day.

Nightline

The review that the Executive Committee has been mandated to do is still ongoing, and is on track to be published by the deadline of Easter.

Part of the policy was to provide training for liberation officers for when students might disclose information to them. Staff that support our liberation officers are continuously reviewing training given to these officers.

Pay & Display parking

I’ve spoken to University Estates and they are planning to, in the future, change the Pay and Display parking meters to allow paying by card in addition to cash.

I continuously bring up with estates about signage and knowledge of parking on plot 7 and the golf course, which hopefully they increase.

In addition to this, when we are aware of inappropriate use of disabled bays, we actively raise this with the University.

If anyone has any questions about this blog, or our AGM, please feel free to get in touch!

Amy
