Union Development & Democracy Officer Blog

Hey! I’m Jade and I’m your Development and Democracy Officer for this year. It’s my job to help develop Keele SU to make sure it’s responding to the needs of students. I also make sure students feel represented, while acting as a voice for Keele students on issues and campaigns they care about in the University, local community and nationally.

At Keele I have studied a BA in Politics with Sociology and a PG Dip. As a student, I held a part-time officer role and attended many clubs and society events. Outside of University, I love game nights with my friends, going shopping, listening to JLS and laughing at my own jokes.

Talk to me about:

  • Making Keele SU a more welcoming place for everyone
  • The facilities and services that students need such as transport, parking, laundry and accommodation
  • Cost-of-Living
  • Empowering the student voice through part-time roles, elections and Networks

Jack's Union General Meeting (UGM) Report - March 2021

Hello! I'm Jack Karimi and I'm the Union Development & Democracy Officer. I am the chief representative of students to the university, communicating with students as to what the university is doing, and representing students on top University leadership committees. As well as that, I lead on policies that affect student experience, the union's development, as well as our democratic processes as a union.

This meeting’s report is a smaller one due to the Annual Leave I took in order to manage my campaign for re-election.

Covid-19 & Accommodation

I have continued to be in contact with the Vice Chancellor and University leadership about the issue of accommodation, and will continue to be in touch as students begin to return to campus in a staggered manner and safety becomes an emerging priority.

I plan to meet ASK in the coming days about the Rent Strikes motion, and providing information to students who intend to protest or rent strike.

Accountability

I chose to delay the rollout of officer accountability structures due to other officers waiting on important news from the University and the election period. I hope to hold some form of event and will continue to be in discussions about how best this can be achieved.

Future Priorities

I plan to meet with SU staff to fulfil the motion on finding and selling alternatives to disposable masks to students.

I will continue to work on my main policies of ensuring that central services, such as buses, parking, and laundrettes, are working for students. However, I am mindful that with Covid-19 these policies will be largely on maintaining the services we have.

Considering that we are now in a transition period between Union Development and Democracy Officers, I will begin consultation with students to see what they’d like me to do in terms of keeping the SU running and campaigning on priorities over the coming months.
